National Records, a British title, medals and qualifying standards for the World Indoors.
The Scottish contingent in Sheffield over the way may have been smaller than in recent years but there were still a handful of significant performances.
Steph Twell took gold in a Women’s 3000m race which saw Josephine Moultrie land silver as both athletes went under the 9.00 time required for GB selection for the World Indoors in Portland next month.
There were five more bronzes for Lynsey Sharp, Anna Gordon, Maddie Murray, Guy Learmonth and Sarah Warnock for an overall medal tally of seven – albeit that 800m runners Learmonth and Sharp in particular would have hoped for better.
Yet the stand-out performance arguably came in the 200m heats as Cameron Tindle, at the age of 17, broke the Scottish National Record indoors for the distance, claiming an U20 Record in the process.
Tindle clocked 21.15 to beat the previous best of 21.25 set a couple of years ago by Ryan Oswald and hint once again at an exciting future. Cameron also made it through the semis to reach Sunday’s final, where he finished sixth. Cameron’s own U20 record had been 21.24, set only a fortnight earlier.
‘I think this weekend was my best shot at the senior record,’ said Cameron, who has the World Juniors this summer as a target.
‘I’m happy with my performance so I can take this into the outdoor season.’
Steph Twell – British title win in Sheffield
The Women’s 3000m was another highlight from a Scottish perspective.
Twell followed up her fine run and Native Record a week earlier in Glasgow to win the title with a dominant display in 8.54.99. Moultrie, chasing that qualification time after a poor run at the Glasgow GP, delivered in fine style as she pushed the early pace and then followed Twell home in 8.58.75 for a Scottish medal 1-2.
There were three Scots in the Women’s 800m final but Sharp had to settle for third in 2.03.50 after taking the lead on the last lap, while Mhairi Hendry was fifth in 205.98 and Philippa Millage produced another superb performance for a V35 athlete at 2.06.74.
With Learmonth a bronze medallist, Murray also finished third in the Women’s 1500m in 4.16.49 after making much of the pace. Sarah Inglis was 8th in that race.
Long jumper Warnock is a regular British Champs medallist and she took bronze this time with 5.96m.
Anna Gordon savours the moment in Sheffield
*Anna Gordon’s pole vault performance was the highlight of the Saturday action.
A number of Scots missed out as the likes of Allan Smith and Zoey Clark were among those to call-off in the final couple of days before the event.
But Gordon raised the bar on her performance with a 4.00m clearance to take third place and bronze in the Women’s pole vault competition.
That was National Academy member Anna making good on a ‘promise’ she made on these pages a couple of weeks earlier when setting an U20 Record at 3.92m at the Scottish Senior Champs – and telling us ‘I’m sure there’s a 4.00m there if I can just get everything right on the day’.
On Saturday, the Cardiff-based Pitreavie AAC athlete said: ‘I’m not sure what I am doing (differently) but my coach has been incredible. I can’t fault the work we’re doing at my set-up in Cardiff. And this was a great competition and a great result.’
Among other performances of note were a PB for Adam Thomas in the 60m at 6.79; a fourth plac e for high jumper David Smith with 2.22m; and a 8.58 run for Heather Paton in the 60m Hurdles.
