Aberdeen is poised to become a centre for world class athletics excellence following the decision of US-based company Altis to establish a presence in the city.
Altis, which takes its title from the original name for Olympia where the first Olympic Games were held, is headed by globally renowned coach John Godina.
No fewer than 17 Altis athletes, representing 13 different nations, competed in last summer’s world athletics championships in Beijing. Among them is Great Britain’s Greg Rutherford, the reigning Olympic, Commonwealth, European and world long jump champion.
It has all been made possible by a partnership arrangement involving Aberdeen Sports Village, the University of Aberdeen, Robert Gordon University, SPEAR Physiotherapy, and Aberdeen AAC.
Coach Eddie Mckenna, whose athletes include Commonwealth Games 4×400 metres relay runner and Rio Olympic hopeful Zoey Clark, has been one of the driving forces behind the project.
‘The partnership with Altis only strengthens the excellent relationships fostered by the Hydrasun Athletics Academy over the last six years,’ said Eddie.
‘Now the opportunity exists for Aberdeen to be the No 1 destination for any athlete who wants a truly world class environment, facilities, and an opportunity to be the very best. It’s a truly exciting prospect.’
Altis will make use of the top class facilities at Aberdeen Sports Village which includes an indoor 135m six lane running track as well as the full outdoor track and field provision. The Altis centre will also serve as a hub for continuing professional development, delivering education programmes to both coaches and therapists.
Aberdeen Sports Village Chief Executive Officer Duncan Sinclair said: ‘ASV is delighted with the announcement of the Altis Aberdeen partnership. Altis have an international standing in the athletics community and our city should be very proud that we have secured this endorsement.
‘Being associated with an international athletics brand that has a reputation for delivering success is a huge boost for ASV, as well as our athletics partners, Hydrasun and Aberdeen.’
