Jacob Adkin attended a Home Countries Hill Running training camp earlier this month – and the preparation paid off for the Moorfoot Runners athlete as he won the U20 gold in the scottishathletics junior championships at Ben Lomond.

He was one of six champions to emerge from the challenging races which also count as double points in the age group league for the season.

Catriona Graves was the U20 women’s winner as she followed up a fine run in the Scottish 5k Champs at Silverknowes which saw her recognised as the best Junior.

Adkin headed the U20 men’s field impressively over the 6k course, with 360m climb, as another athlete who attended the get together in Wales the week before, Logan Rees of Fife AC, took the silver medal.

Aberdeen AAC’s Alexander Chepelin, who has orienteering experience with GB at age group level, claimed the bronze.

It was quite a day for the Rees family from Fife with Tristan taking the U17 boys title in fine style in his first year in that age group and a third member of the family, George, also a medallist.

Rees won the U17 gold from two Gala Harriers athletes, Jason McIntosh and Thomas Otton.

Kilbarchan’s Laura Stark stepped up to the mark to win the U17 girls title from Pitreavie’s Emily Nicholson and Ailsa Cruickshanks of Fife AC.

Joshua Boyle of Ronhill Cambuslang won the U15 gold with George Rees taking silver there. Euan Gollan of East Sutherland took home the bronze.

Dundee Hawkhill’s Maddie Owen collected gold at U15 girls level from Mhairi Wallace of Moorfoot and Meggan Keith of Inverness Harriers.

With the races over 6k, 4k and 2.5k, climbs of 360m, 280m and 200m, as well as sodden underfoot conditions, it was a testing examination.

Following the distribution of flyers at the National XC in February, there were larger fields than usual which offers encouragement for the Hill Running Commission ñ with thanks to Don Reid and his team as well as all those involved in organising and taking part in the Fun Run.

Jennifer Ricketts of Deeside was the other medallist, with silver at U20 women behind Graves.
