Edinburgh AC finish fifth in European Clubs

It was a big weekend for Edinburgh AC on a number of fronts, so let’s start this round-up with the performance of the club’s women at the European Club Cups competition in Portugal.

The EAC team finished a creditable fifth place after two days of competition which saw Spanish club Valencia emerge as outright winners.

Kirsty Yates was the top performer with a PB of of 16.09 in shot which maintained her good early-season form and took her to joint second in the Scottish all-time list with Alison Rodger.

Jayne Nisbet delivered another Commonwealth Games standard with 1.81 in the high jump and Susan McKelvie did likewise with a hammer throw of 61.70. Sarah Warnock’s 6.35 long jump was achieved in windy (+5.9) conditions.

As ever on these occasions, it was a team effort however with others to come up with good performances in Portugal including the likes of Emily Dudgeon, Hannah Lawler and Avril Jackson as well as the relay squads.

*While EAC competed in Portugal, Lynsey Sharp was in action on Saturday in Belgium.

And the 2012 European champion for 800m came up with a fine run to win the Flanders Cup event in Lokeren in 2.02.42 and claim a second Commonwealth Games qualifying standard.

Lynsey had one previously from early in the 2013 season and has been forced to remain extremely patient despite the frustration of a series of injury problems. Now she can start looking ahead to Hampden, subject to ratification and selection.

Myles Edwards was at the same event and recorded an 800m PB of 1.50.37.

*As If that wasn’t enough, then EAC’s Chris O’Hare made headlines as well in London.

Chris won the Westminster Mile in only his second road race mile with a time of 4.05.3 enough to see off the opposition in the English capital.

With Roger Bannister making the medal presentations it was a memorable day for O’Hare, who is of course already selected for 1500m at the Commonwealth Games.

Kris Gauson was 14th in 4.23 while Beth Potter came home seventh in the women’s race in 4.42.

*Shaftesbury Barnet competed at the European Club Cups event on the men’s side with Scottish athletes in action.

Chris Bennett went beyond 70m for the second successive weekend in hammer with 70.34 while Gregor MacLean was at 5.15 in the pole vault. Kris Robertson clocked 47.35 in the 400m and John Carr was at 7.33 (w/+2.2) in long jump.
