Crawley picked for GB at 50K

Friday 2nd October 2015

Yet another Scottish athlete has been picked to represent GB at a World Championship event – this time at 50k.

Mike Crawley of Corstorphine AAC is one of three athletes selected by British Athletics for the IAU event in Doha in December.

We make it now around 40 Scottish athletes who have been chosen in the course of 2015, across a range of disciplines, to represent GB at World or European Championship at senior or age group level.

It is a healthy tally and reflects well on the hard work being put in by athletes, coaches and clubs – both here in Scotland and beyond these shores.

Crawley has followed the pattern set by Ross Houston by moving up to the ultra distances and a 2.19.39 run in the marathon earlier this year persuaded the selectors of his ability to make that transition.

Houston, remember, stepped up to 100k for the Anglo-Celtic Plate in 2015 and impressed enough to win a World Champs call-up for GB although unfortunately an injury cost him the chance to compete in Holland.

Now Crawley, who is coached by Max Coleby, is heading to Doha for the 50k on Friday 4 December alongside fellow GB debutant Michael Kallenberg. Georgie Bruinvels is the only woman selected.

The team leader Walter Hill commented: ‘We have selected three strong young athletes for the IAU 50km World Championships and will be looking to build upon the successes of the British Athletics team at the recent 100km Championships in the Netherlands.’
