Battery Park, Greenock – venue for Sunday’s Junior Road Races
The Junior Road Races head for Greenock this weekend and it is an event which continues to show steady growth as our young athletes commit to competition.
We’ve had 578 entries for the boys and girls races in three age groups and that’s up on the past few years with last year’s tally 542.
In the older age groups, at U15 and U17, there are places up for grabs for teams to represent Scotland at the London Mini Marathon.
Teams of six are entered for that event and the Junior Road Races are the primary selection event for the trip south in April.
There are also individual Scottish Championship medals and team places on the podium on offer on Sunday across the U13, U15 and U17 races.
Riccarton in Edinburgh has been the venue for the past couple of years, but the Road Running and Cross Country Commission sought a change for this year and now Battery Park in Greenock will stage the event.
All at scottishathletics offer a thank-you in advance to the local organisers in Greenock and to clubs supplying marshal help – Inverclyde AC and Greenock Glenpark Harriers, with the Inverclyde Local Athletics Partnership (ILAP) hugely influential, too.
Good luck to all athletes, coaches, parents and clubs planning to be involved on Sunday, with more information on the event and venue on our Events page.
Here’s the race start schedule:
U13 Girls 11.30am
U13 Boys 11.45am
U15 Girls 12 noon
U15 Boys 12.25pm
U17 Women 12.45pm
U17 Men 1.10pm
*We’re hoping to do a bit of (amateur) video on Sunday – weather permitting – with action from last year’s race finishes at Riccarton having proved popular.
Here is the Men’s U17 action from 2014 with the race won that day by Euan Gillham, with Jonny Glen in second. Both have won GB vests in cross country this season.
