Two months ago some members of Peterhead Running Club and Peterhead Jogscotland formed a working group to look at the potential for reforming Peterhead Athletics Club.
The group, with the support and encouragement of Alasdhair Love, Regional development Manager (Grampian) of scottishathletics (pictured), have now reached the culmination of their efforts.
A draft constitution has been agreed and this will be put to public meeting with a view to appointing office bearers on Thursday June 26 at 7.45pm in the conference room of Peterhead Academy.
The chair of the working group, Stewart Chalmers, said: ‘The inspiration for this idea really came from the increasing numbers of young people taking part in track sessions at Catto Park, the development project for Catto Park, and that this is the year of the Commonwealth Games with the Queen’s baton coming to Peterhead.’
With an athletics club, it is now hoped to offer a range of track and field opportunities for junior and senior athletes.
Already five members of the working group have completed the level 1 Coaches Assistants course.
Alasdhair Love, Regional development Manager (Grampian) of scottishathletics said: ‘It is fantastic that members of the jogging and running community in Peterhead are coming together to look at the opportunity to capitalise on the great work done by Active Schools in the area to create an athletics club which can cater for all ages and abilities and to allow potential athletes to reach their potential and take up the sport.
‘The bounce effect from London 2012 has shown that there is interest within communities and with Glasgow 2014 coming this summer this is an excellent opportunity to make use of the facilities in Peterhead as well as strengthen the case for improving the Catto Park development.
‘If you would like to get involved or to find out more about becoming a member please come along to the inaugural meeting next Thursday at Peterhead Academy or contact Stewart.’
