Renfrew: U15 and U17 review and Masters

Giffnock North AAC often the pace when it comes to age group races at National events – and it was no different at Renfrew.

Scotland’s U17 Athlete of the Year, Erin Wallace, took the Women’s U17 race over 3K to follow on an earlier win over 2K by her Giffnock club-mate, Hamish Armitt.

For Wallace it was a good return to action after a quiet spell in terms of athletics.

‘My last real race was the Euro Youths 1500m in Georgia in July and then after that one in the YDL,’ said Erin.

‘I had a week or two of a break at the end of the season – although I kept on swimming – and it was good to come back today and win it.

‘I was delighted to win the Scottish U17 Athlete of the Year award last week, with my dad collecting it on my behalf. The club have said we will do the presentation again at the Giffnock North AAC awards night so that will be a special moment.’

Wallace won it by three second from silver medallist Naomi Lang of Aberdeen and third-placed Lauren Dickson of Lasswade AAC. Giffnock duly took the team golds from Central AC and Lasswade.

The U17 Men’s race saw Fife AC’s Adam Scott overhaul Edinburgh AC’s Freddie Carcas, who finished second, with a national medal for Law and District AAC as James Gillon crowned his fine run with a bronze.

Scott’s great run led Fife AC to overall team success with VP-Glasgow packing well for the silvers and Edinburgh taking third place.

Armitt had to work hard to hold off Edinburgh’s Joe Ewing to win the U15 Men’s title as David McNair of Kilbarchan AAC landed bronze.

Kilbarchan AAC were our host club at Renfrew and they celebrated with team golds in that race as Fife took the silvers and Giffnock the bronzes.

The U15 Girls race was the first of the day and there was a win there for the familiar figure of Lily Jane Evans-Haggerty of VP-Glasgow.

Like the U15 Boys race, the winner was pushed all the way with Inverclyde AC’s Nuala McCheyne only two seconds behind. The third place on the podium went to Team East Lothian athlete, Cera Gemmell.

Giffnock took the gold medals in the U15 Girls team race with the silvers headed for VP-Glasgow and the bronzes for Kilbarchan.

The Masters medals were typically hard-fought – with only nine seconds covering the top three in the Women’s W40 category, for example.

Suzanne Gilmour of VP-Glasgow won that with 15.00 from silver medallist Avril Mason and third-placed Lesley Chisholm of Garscube.

In the Men’s v40 category, Robert Gilroy of Cambuslang was the clear winner in 12.56 from Crispin Walsh (Bellahouston Harriers) and Steven Campbell (Greenock Glenpark).
