Renfrew lists – as Central target Team Challenge double

Friday 28th October 2016

Central AC men – maximum points after the District and National XC Relays

Entry lists for Short Course Champs

Lindsays offers – helps members help clubs

Renfrew’s King George V Park at Broadloan is a new venue for 2016 in the Lindsays Cross Country Season and we now have start-lists available for the Short Course Champs on Saturday 5 November.

It is the second fixture in the Lindsays Season after a superb response and atmosphere at Cumbernauld for the National XC Relays.

And Central AC are chasing double success in the Scottish Cross Country Team Challenge at the Short Course Champs, which features 4K races for Seniors at Renfrew.

Derek Easton’s squad have maximum points following an 11th successive win in the East District XC relays and five-in-a-row at the National XC Relays at Cumbernauld last weekend.

And Central AC women are joint top in that category with Edinburgh Uni Hare and Hounds – who won the National XC Relays golds. Those two clubs are tied on 29 points.

In that Women’s division, Kilbarchan AAC are on 27 points and VP-Glasgow on 26 and both will hope to still be in the hunt, with 20 points on offer at Broadloan, Renfrew, in the 4K Champs on November 5. Shettleston Harriers and Edinburgh AC are currently joint fifth on 23 points.

In the Men’s division, Central have those 30 points with Edinburgh Uni on 28, followed by third-placed Shettleston Harriers on 27 and Aberdeen AAC on 26. Cambuslang Harriers complete the top five with 24 points at the moment.

Once again, we’ve had a huge response in terms of entries for the Short Course Champs.

When races at U15 and U17 level were introduced to this event a few years ago it was hoped the profile and popularity of the Short Course Champs – regularly staged at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow – would grow and that certainly seems to have happened. Senior athletes are now entering in huge numbers.

The individual titles are coveted, too, with Olympian Laura Muir on the start-list for Renfrew as she looks to defend the gold she won a year ago on a very wet and muddy afternoon at Bellahouston.

There are a raft of GB and Scotland internationals set to join Laura with those names including Josephine Moultrie, Rosie Smith, Emily Dudgeon, Sarah Inglis, Steph Pennycook and Morag MacLarty as well as a couple of younger athletes better known for track exploits like Mhairi Hendry and Kelsey Stewart.

Fellow GB and NI international Jake Wightman, who reached the 1500m final at the European Championships in Holland in July, is entered for Edinburgh AC and the other contenders are likely to include Alastair Hay, silver medallist last year, Tewolde Mengisteab, Michael Ferguson, Ben Stevenson, Jamie Crowe, Andy Douglas, Craig Ruddy and a number of others in what looks like an exciting Senior Men’s race.
