Up and running – District events start the scottishathletics track and field season (photo by Steve Adam)
The track and field season for 2016 is almost with us – and the District Championships are the first of the scottishathletics events this summer.
Three venues play host to the East, West and North District champs over 13/14 May and entries are now open online.
Friday night athletics has happened over the past couple of years in the East and the West and that will be the case this year in the North, too. This will help ease what has become a very busy one-day North programme recently.
Inverness stages that event with Grangemouth the venue for the East District Champs and the Ayrshire Athletics Arena in Kilmarnock plays host to West athletes.
These championships are for all age groups from U13 through to Seniors. Masters athletes compete as the Seniors. Closing date for entries will be April 27.

All the usual events are on offer at all the venues with the exception of steeplechase and 5000m. District Champs in the 5000m will take place at the Glasgow Athletics Association Miler Meet at on Friday 29 July.
There will be 3000m steeplechase opportunity for U20/Senior Men at Kilmarnock and for U20/Senior Women at Grangemouth.
For the first time this year, and following large entries in certain events at the National Championships, we plan to apply standards to the long jump at the Scottish Age Group Champs at Grangemouth in August at U13 and U15 level and also for U17s (within the Senior Champs in August)
There are no restrictions/standards applied on long jump for the District Champs.
Here’s the important info around long jump:
‘Athletes who finish in the TOP 6 of their respective District Championship Long Jump event will have their entry AUTOMATICALLY accepted into the National Championships in that Age Group.
Athletes who fail to compete in their District Championships, or finish outside the top 6, in order to gain entry to the National Championships must have achieved the following performance in the last two years:
U13 GIRLS – 3m80; U13 BOYS – 3m80; U15 GIRLS – 4m30; U15 BOYS – 4m30; U17 WOMEN – 4m60; U17 MEN – 4m60; U20 and SENIOR – not required.
(NB The above ruling will only be implemented when Event entries are more than 24 athletes)’
