Jazmine makes New Year Sprint history

Saturday 2nd January 2016

Borders athlete Jazmine Tomlinson made New Year Sprint history on January 1 as she became the first female winner in the event’s 147-year history.

The Edinburgh AC sprinter, who was an 8-1 outsider for the final at Musselburgh Racecourse, just won the verdict in 11.38 as she held off the chasing pack. Tomlinson raced off a 20.5m start on the soft grass track.

Favourite Ryan Houten was second as Jazmine, an 18-year-old from Jedburgh, picked up the first prize of £4000- on an emotional day for the Tomlinson family with father Darren having been eliminated in the qaulifying ties on December 30 at Meadowmill.

Jazmine’s coaches are Bruce Scot and John Steede, who formed the TLJT club in 2009.
