Coach Development – Roadshows are next

Coach development is fundamental to scottishathletics and, following the success of the recent Coaching Conference, there are learning opportunities coming up between now and Christmas.

The Foundation Courses at the Emirates on October 24/25 on offer to those at Coaching Assistant level and above. (These courses will soon be known at Athletics Development and Physical Preparation 1)

This course costs £30 for scottishathletics Coach Members.

At the conference we launched the new National Coach Development Programme. As part of the programme, scottishathletics are hosting a series of Roadshows across the country to give coaches and clubs the opportunity to find out more about the Programme  . . . and how it can benefit them.

The confirmed dates are as follows: 4 November – Emirates Arena, Glasgow;  11 November – South Gyle, Edinburgh; 18 November – Grangemouth; Grampian and Highlands and Islands to be confirmed.

The Roadshows will run from 7pm to 8pm in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at Grangemouth. These are open to all scottishathletics coaches at all levels and are FREE.

To sign-up for these please email performanceteam@scottishathletics.org.uk

RunBalmoral – great weekend planned next April

Entries for the 2016 RunBalmoral races have opened with organisers announcing they have submitted a bid to host the scottishathletics 5km road running championships.

The RunBalmoral races will take place in the magnificent grounds of Balmoral Castle over the weekend of 23/24 April 2016. The Royal estate offers one of the most dramatic settings for a running event, not just in the UK, but worldwide.

Last year more than 5,000 runners of all ages signed up for the programme of eight races, and in keeping with the strong community focus of the event, these Balmoral runners raised well in excess of  £100,000 for local charities.

The race weekend programme will kick off as usual on the Saturday with the MPH Ltd primary schools 1.5Km races, followed by the Kongsberg Maritime secondary schools 2.5Km, the ConocoPhillips 5Km and the Stena Drilling Tartan 10Km. The 5Km and 10Km also include a corporate team challenge competition.

Then, on the Sunday, there’s the Apollo duathlon (5km  run/20km cycle/5km run), the Glacier Energy Trail Race (15 Miles) and the Wee Trail race (3 miles)- for the past two years the Wee Trail race has been part of the jogscotland challenge series.

With thousands of spectators coming along to support the runners, the estate will be buzzing with excitement and for those not taking part in the races there is an opportunity to visit the Event Village where a range of activities for all ages will be on offer.

If the bid to host the scottishathletics championship event is successful, this will be incorporated within the ConocoPhilips 5km which usually attracts a capacity field of 1,000 runners.

RunBalmoral Chairman James Knowles said: ‘We’re looking forward to another successful year and if we get the scottishathletics championship race that will be a bonus.

‘However, all our races promise to be exciting events in which  experienced international athletes and first time fun runners will rub shoulders as they compete on traffic-free courses offering magnificent views of the castle and the spectacular surrounding countryside.’
