Scotland athletes at the Snowdon International hill race
Scotland Selection announcement story
The Scotland team put in some strong performances at the iconic Ras Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon Race), which celebrated its 40th anniversary last Saturday with another hard-fought international competition.
After the late withdrawal of the more experienced Megan Crawford due to illness, the women’s team consisted of Sophie Horrocks and Georgia Tindley (both Edinburgh University Hares and Hounds).
Sophie and Georgia were both making their Scotland debut at this race and both ran strongly to finish 6th and 7th behind the winner, Sarah McCormack of Ireland. Sophie might have finished a couple of places higher but for a fall on the testing descent.
Sam Hesling (Highland HR) was the leading Scot amongst the men. Always a strong climber, Sam was very pleased to go from 9th at the summit to 6th at the finish in a race won by Italy’s Emanuele Manzi. ‘I’m totally smashed,’ was Sam’s comment afterwards.
Nursing an injury, Kyle Greig (Forres) had a brave run to finish 13th, disappointed that he couldn’t improve on his 9th place last year. Tom Martyn (Hunters Bog Trotters) was another Scotland debutant, who after a good climb to 8th at the summit, just ahead of Sam, found the descent much harder going but he hung on to finish a creditable 19th.
The men’s team was also depleted by illness, with Iain MacCorquodale forced to miss what would have been a first Scotland vest for him.

Adam Scott wins the SIAB 3000m (photo by Bobby Gavin)
Scotland were hosts this year to the traditional SIAB Schools International match with Grangemouth the venue to welcome visitors from Ireland, Wales and England in what is a 15-16 year-old age group.
England Schools, with a huge population advantage, tend to dominate the fixture and it was no different again this year. Scotland were slightly depleted by the World Youth Games in Colombia and finished fourth in both the boys and girls matches.
Nonetheless, there were some very strong individual performances notably from Alisha Rees, who won a sprint double, Adam Scott, Erin Wallace and Drew McIntyre
